Cocktails For A Girls Night Out

We all need a girls’ night out regularly to keep us sane, and if you live in Lagos it makes it more vital. From traffic during daily commutes, to the hassle of 9-5’s and entrepreneurship, it’s clear we need to constantly decompress with our support systems.

And even though popular culture has made female friendships seem like a bloody Game of Thrones battle, ignore those lies because once you find your tribe of women, you’re sorted for life. Women tend to be deep with each other and when you mix that with alcohol, you can bag a free therapy session.

I am writing this for the women whose intense jobs and dramatic personal lives often require a solid drink with BFFs from time to time.

1. Cosmopolitan

If you watched Sex and the City, you'll know that this drink is the antidote to everything chaotic about living as a young woman in a city like Lagos. From dealing with Yoruba demons who are basically the Nigerian version of Mr Big, to the traffic, pollution and overpopulation. The cocktail which got its popularity from a show that symbolises the era of female independence is definitely enough reason to have it on a girls night out. Just like how the Martini was exemplified as the alpha male drink in James Bond, the Cosmopolitan soon became the female alternative to power (that’s the reason they come in similar glasses). So if you’re a woman that believes in her power and independence you know what you should be drinking.

2. Margarita

You probably don’t know but “Margarita” is the latin name for Margaret, and has quite a number of stories featuring women. In the late 1930s, a tequila brand in California collaborated with a local bartender who named the drink after his wife. Around the 1940s in Mexico, another bartender had made the first margarita with a salt rim, for the actress called Marjorie (also Margarita in Spanish).

An Esquire piece from 1953 on the cocktail led with this title: “She’s from Mexico, and her name is the Margarita cocktail.”

Bruh, if you know anything about history is the fact that women are usually anonymous. So please embrace this cocktail fervently for your next girls night out — if not for anything, do it for the culture.

3. Mojito

Despite the misconception that wine is synonymous with women, I urge you to opt for a mojito than wine because it keeps you sharp and makes you remember all the details you don’t want your girlfriends to miss.  Strong or mild? The mojito is the way to go.
